Howard believes that plants should be kept outdoors especially if they're not housebroken and he thinks faking it is better than the real thing.
But with pets, he has no choice but have them indoors because all of Beth's outdoor pets have been killed by cars and coyotes and in no time flat they are as flat as the pavement providing there are any remains. When asked what happened to Jessica the rabbit, her response is the same as with most of her pet deaths, which is, "Don't ask".
But since Howard set up Beth with her cat adoption gimmick, Beth houses them indoors but they are caged unless let out as photo props for her selfies and she throws free food at them she gets from the North Shore Animal League (NSAL) before dumping them back at NSAL or at a foster home with the overstock dumped back where they came from. No one can track those cats which is how the Sterns want it to fool any pesky IRS agents lurking around the grounds digging up the buried bones.
The irony of course is that Howard is a hothouse plant himself inside his penthouse in Manhattan away from the hustle and bustle in Beth's hedgerow as she plotted a plane trip to Paris that failed miserably blaming bed bugs and bombings as the cause of the cancellation.
